Although Mambo came before Cha Cha Cha in the whole Salsa evolution story, these days I often describe Cha Cha Cha as the gateway drug to Mambo.

Why?

Because it’s often the first rhythm that students can feel strongly in the music and viscerally connect to.

The slower tempo, the contrast of slow and fast steps, and the energy of Cha Cha Cha music is a combination that feels really good!

And once you have that connection to the congas, the guiro, and the upbeat accents, you start to fully “get” the musical reasoning behind dancing On 2, or contratiempo.
